IT’S HERE! | Capture the Gem League 2 Announcement

Wow! If I had a nickel for every time a new Capture the Gem League was announced, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. Right?

Capture the Gem League is BACK!

That’s right, it’s here! The planets have aligned perfectly and with the passing of the Blood Moon, Capture the Gem League 2 is ready to get going!

But what is Capture the Gem League?

For those not well versed in the deep Penguin Games lore, Capture the Gem League – CTGL for short – is a massive tournament based on our minigame Capture the Gem. In this tournament, teams duke it out on the battlefield to claim victory over others. This goes on in a tournament setting until finally, a team is crowned as the winners!

The last Capture the Gem league tournament was… five years ago, and since then we’ve been itching to get a second one going! And finally, after delays, scheduling, and hard work (procrastination), we are happy to announce that Capture the Gem League 2 – CTGL2 – officially starts this July 2023 – mark it on your calendar!

Game differences

CTGL2 won’t be your average game(s) of CTG. This tournament is for HARDCORE PROFESSIONALS (or you know, people who like having fun…). As such, there will a bit of changes to create a more competitive environment. For summary:

  • Class limits: Each team can only have one class per player. Decide who is playing what before your match!
  • Team sizes: Teams can only have 8 players total, with 6 who play in the matches and 2 who act as reserves (in case your teammate decides to bail…). Make sure you know who the leader is.
  • Private lobbies: Games will be hosted in private lobbies, run by our Event Coordinators. Will they be streamed? Of course – details about that later!
  • Tournament structure: CTGL2 will be run via a double-elimination bracket.
  • Map order: Certain rounds will have certain maps, with other rounds being a complete mystery for teams.
  • Glory to the winners: There can only be one! None of that “everyone wins” crap.
  • Events: There are none! It’s all about the SKILL.

Of course, as the event creeps forward, there will be more mention on further game differences, but for the time-being, this is the case.

Prizes

What’s a tournament without prizes? A for-fun event? Absolute hearsay!

But yes, there are prizes for being the best of the best.

How to Register

If the idea of sweet victory and the chance to participate in one of Penguin Games’ biggest events excites you, then do not hesitate to register!

BUT! Before registering: Make sure you have a team!

Believe it or not, but this isn’t a solo race. If you want to win, you’ve gotta form a unstoppable force. Find some people and pick a cool team name (super important!) before registering. In addition, decide among (ඞ) yourselves on who will be the team leader. This is important for us for communication and also making sure your team doesn’t fall apart on match day.

If you’re a loner or need some help finding the right people, join the Discord server! We have a dedicated space for everything CTGL2-related, and a special channel dedicated for forming new teams.

Registering on Challonge

We will be using Challonge, a dedicated website for managing tournaments, events, and more. Registering your team is easy as 1-2-3!

A quick demonstration of registering a team on Challonge
  1. Head over to the tournament page on Challonge: https://challonge.com/aqa8oa7v
  2. Proceed to the Register tab.
  3. Enter your team name.
  4. Answer the questions prompted to you.

PRESS HERE TO REGISTER

And just like that, you’ve become an official participant for Capture the Gem League 2! Get hyped!

A quick note: Currently, the limit for the total amount of teams that can register is eight (around 64 players). This is subject to change! If more people register than expected, we will bump up the total team count.

As a reminder, each team has a participant limit of eight people, six for players in matches and two as extra reserves. If you need extras, peep the Discord server!

If you register with more than eight, or if you are found to be participating with more than eight members in your team, your team will be forfeit from the tournament immediate.

Rules

As much fun as this event sounds, we need to lay out some ground rules.

  1. Be a good sport. At the heart of it all, Capture the Gem League 2 is a for-fun event first, competitive event second. Don’t be a sore loser if your team loses, and don’t be mean to others and your own team because of that.
  2. Play fairly. This means playing with the right amount of players, not using cheats and hacks to put yourself at an advantage, and overall trying to not break anything just because. Breaking this rule is grounds for an immediate forfeit for your team, among other sever actions.
  3. Respect the community guidelines. You have to follow this regardless, so why try to change that?
Note: These rules are subject to change as the event develops. If that is the case, we will make sure to notify the participants ASAP.

Further Comments

We’re super excited for Capture the Gem League 2. Ever since the original CTGL premiered, the sequel has been in the back of our minds since forever!

But why did it take five years to start the next one?

Well, there is no quick-and-easy button for making a tournament. And besides, we wouldn’t just want to make a tournament. We want to go above and beyond!

Among that are other reasons:

  • Our interests in the past years have shifted around. Sorry, sometimes tournaments aren’t that interesting to us.
  • Our time commitments are variable. Penguin Games is a team built on volunteers, and as such the server is dependent on the patience of said volunteers. If everybody is busy at the same time, it gets very hard to organize large-scope projects and whatnot.
  • Those god damn Terraria updates. It’s like Re-Logic (bless their hearts) have a vendetta against us! Jokes aside, whenever Terraria has their final updates, that pushes back projects we have in motion, so that we can update the server again with the latest and greatest features. I mean, just look at 1.4.4 for example. So traumatic…
  • We’re busy trying to overthrow the shadow Terraria government. Expect a new world in a year or so.

That being said, if you’re reading this blog post, that means Capture the Gem League 2 is real! We did it! It’s happening!

And for that, we want to say thanks for sticking around. Whether if you’re a CTGL veteran, an old regular, or a casual newbie, we encourage you to register for CTGL2, because who knows when this will happen again? This is a once-in-a-Terraria-lifetime opportunity!

That’s all from us at Penguin Games… for now. We’ll be sharing more information about Capture the Gem League 2 as July approaches. But for now, find your teammates, register, and get ready for the summer of Capture the Gem!
