Next Year We Are Probably 10 Years Old | 2024 Server Recap

What is up Penguin Games nation! It is absolutely crazy reading the title and think that 10 years ago, the server was just beginning to find its footing. 10 years ago, I was really annoying, and now, I am still annoying, but at least I get to share that to everyone reading this.

Happy New Year Penguin Gamers and Terrarians!

2024 has been an interesting year, to say the least. With the constant fear of Terraria multiplayer relevancy looming over us, we kept a humble pace in providing quality updates, changes, and bug fixes to our server. A lot on the server got some love and many updates were small but mighty in impact.

Like every year, we would like to end 2024 with a reflection of the year, what we accomplished, and our feelings approaching 2025. This is especially significant considering… Penguin Games will (likely) be turning 10 years old next year! Now, enough small talk – let us travel back in time.

Server Recap

Internally, we had a lot of bets about when 1.4.5 would be released for Terraria. Let’s say: I have a lot more money Penguin Points now.

Our general approach this year was quality of life; many of our updates focused on the smaller things that meant a lot to our dearest players. And of course, we tackled bugs and added more content (such as a new Penguin Party microgame!) to our gamemodes.

As a reminder, the latest information can be found on the Discord server, blog, and by being on the server.

running /private ctg -config rngctg-onhit for the gazillionth time

You know how some moderators hosted their own modified versions of gamemodes? Well, we took that and gave it to the people. Surely, not a big deal right?

Just some of the custom configs added to Capture the Gem. Oh yeah, Class Wars, Hunger Games, and Tank Wars are supported too.

Yeah, needless to say, it is a popular feature.

Jokes aside, this was such a fun feature to bring to our patrons. I think our gamemodes are fine the way they are, but I understand at some point it can get a bit stale playing the same strategy. So, come along with this feature, and suddenly the possibilities are endless! We look forward to seeing how our players take advantage of custom configs and what mischief they will cook up next.

With our C# rewrite of Tank Wars, we took some creative liberties in translating chunky execution scripts to clean code. Unfortunately, we were a little bit too creative and disrupted some of the caveats that made people fall in love with the gamemode originally.

No more! We took the criticism to heart and applied it in tweaking Tank Wars to be a much better experience. For instance, practice mode was revamped, the anti-grief system was more lenient, spawning was improved, and many more small annoyances were resolved. We are listening!

Vanity Update - Accessory Warp

Our vanity system saw a massive update in functionality, and one massive change that came with was accessories! That is right, after years and years of asking, we finally got them added. For our lovely server voters, they are able to set accessories to their character for all to see on the server.

Not just that, we also expanded dye setting to pets and accessories! Finally, your whole persona can be customised to its fullest extent.

Hunger Games Update - Aether

We also gave some much-deserved love to Hunger Games this year. We gave the opportunity for smaller maps but intense matchups with 2-4 player counts, improved our systems to make kills ever more satisfying, took the burden of balancing, and more!

We look forward to Hunger Games thriving more!

Paint Wars makes it mark at Penguin Party!

You’re a kid now, you’re a squ-

Wait, wrong game.

We added a new microgame to Penguin Party: Paint Wars! In short summary, you have two minutes to paint the ground of your team’s color and mark your turf. Sound familiar? Legally, it is not.

We hope you enjoy this intensive

Of course it's the imposter from Among Us.

This summer saw the 200th class added to Class Wars, which is pretty huge all things considering! With Class Wars being one of the earliest gamemodes on the server, it is incredibly humbling to see how far we have gone with the gamemode. One could say the game is in a “league” of its own (cough cough). Now the real challenge is balancing.

The Penguin... has Games?!

And a lot more!

As per usual, trying to fit everything in this blog post is an impossible task.

Soooooo, the next best thing then would be joining the server to find out all the things we are cooking.

Community Recap

As usual, the community side of Penguin Games kept trekking along with a slew of events big and small. It is always fun seeing what the community can cook up and where our collaborations take us.

As a reminder, the latest information can be found on the Discord server, blog, and by being on the server.

We had another fruitful collaboration with the official Terraria Discord server in the form of a Parkour speedrunning contest! For two weeks, we had an onslaught of participants competing for the best time for one of the chosen maps.

Congratulations to 0su for first place on empyrean, and zane for first place on sans.

We are happy with the outcome of our collaboration, and look forward to working with the Terraria Discord server and similar with more events! For now, join their Discord server and talk everything Terraria there.

Let’s ignore the fact we called it “Class Wars Championship” during April Fools.

Sometime after Capture the Gem League 2, we started planning for another tournament, and class Wars ended up being our pick! Sorry Classic Capture the Gem League – some other time. We took the lessons learnt from the previous tournament and applied them so that this would be much smoother in pace, clearer in communication, and overall less messy.

While we did wish to finish the last set of matches before this post, we are determined to finish off this tournament with a bang in the new year! Stay tuned!

For now, keep an eye on the Challonge page, the Discord server, and the Twitch channel for updates.

Reflection of the Year and the Future

In general, our mantra this year was polishing up the server bringing much-needed quality-of-life improvements. What this meant though was that although a lot of our updates were minor, they had a great impact in the long term as these updates provided faster gameplay, convenient systems, and less archaic infrastructure. In short, we put a lot of attention into making the server experience the best it can be, and this is something we aim to continue in 2025.

Speaking of 2025, we will probably be turning 10 years old! I say probably because the date at which the server foundations began is a bit unclear since originally, it served as a private server for Pedguin. Nonetheless, 10 years are approaching us, and we are still too young to play on our server. It is crazy to think that 10 years ago, Penguin (or Pedguin, in this case) Games was just beginning to exist, and now we are still active. What does 2035 look like? I don’t know, that scares me.

As for future plans, we cannot exactly tell you what we work at a moment’s notice – we like to keep secrets too! But, what we can tell you is that new stuff is being worked on. Some of it is exciting, but other stuff is a bit more boring. Regardless, definitely keep an eye out for news as it rolls out.

Wow! Penguin Games is really cool! How can I get involved?

Great question! Here are some pointers:
